Looking for an African Music Festival on the European Continent? Look no Further

Afro Nation is a relatively young but very successful music festival held annually in Portugal. It started out life as a four-day event but since 2020 it is a three-day event. The platform aims to unite the best artist of the following genres at one event: Afrobeats, Dancehall Amapiano, RnB, Hip Hop, and more.

The location for the 2023 Portuguese event is Portimão, the Algarve, like in the previous years. Besides attending the festival, visitors can spend their time in the city which has plenty more on offer and model a longer holiday around Afro Nation. From doing a boat trip along the shores of the region, over visiting the beautiful beaches in and around the city to soaking up the nightlife and cultural offerings the city offers there is fun to be had for everyone.

The festival starts on the 28th of June and finishes on Friday the 30th of June which leaves the weekend for relaxing and soaking in the rest of the city and guarantees for nice weather. The event itself is held on Praia da Rocha, a beach known for its vibrant night life and beautiful sand and water. If you want to get in the mood for the festival already, listen to the mixtapes of the previous years or watch the aftermovies of previous events.

If you can’t or don’t want to go to Portimão you’re in luck as the event has seen other places like the USA, Ghana, Puerto Rico, and Mexico, so be sure to check regularly for the other iterations.

The organizers and founders of the events have also cofounded the weekly UK Afrobeats Chart Show on BBC Radio 1Xtra, showing once more that they are experts in providing you with the best music from the African continent. BBC Radio 1Xtra broadcasts only black music and is a sister station to Radio 1.

This year’s iteration in Portimão has Burna Boy, 50 Cent, Davido, Booba, and Wizkid as main acts. Other acts you should not miss include Nissi, Little Simz, Tyla, Victony, Sauti Sol, Gabzy, Focalitastic, Uncle Waffles, Tyler ICU, Sir Trill, Felo Le Tee, and Sha Sha.

If you want to get in the mood for the festival already, listen to the mixtapes or watch the aftermovies of previous events.
