LE MALI 70 – a Berlin Bigband Meets Their Heroes

The Omniversal Earkestra is a Berlin Based big band founded in 2011. In changing venues, they have performed weekly over the years, also in cooperation with international musicians. On one of these occasions in 2016, they played with Amanar de Kidal from Mali, which influenced their decision to visit the origin of this music heavily. Two years passed, until the decision to visit Mali made it to reality.

Inspired by the young German travellers, they got back to making music once more and recorded the album “Le Mali 70” together in the legendary studio of Salif Keita in Bamako. All this was recorded by the film crew of Markus Schmidt. Apart from the musical performances, the film captures the true spirit of the country, thankfully not turning into a documentary about the conflicts the country suffers from. The artists are filmed in their environment, and nothing seems staged.

Additionally black and white footage from back in the day has been added, so show the circumstances and beauty of life in Mali back then. A lot of these film rolls have been lost but the ones remaining manage to paint a special picture. The music and its artists are reignited and perform once more, for your enjoyment as well!

The movie launches on August 17 in major German cities. For a detailedplan click on the following link!
